Sweet Success: Girl Geek Dinner Philly fall event recap

6 Nov

Last night I stood at the front of the USS Enterprise conference room (so fitting) in Zivtech’s extremely cool Philly office and spoke to a group of women and men about growing a passion into a business.

It may have been one of the coolest things I’ve done through Cupcake Friday Project. No, seriously.

Having the opportunity to tell people my story, talk about what has worked for me on this work-in-progress journey, and really think about what I do and how I do it was huge. It’s put my project into perspective—something I needed.

And hopefully a few people walked out of there with not only a cupcake or cookie, but the understanding that if they are really passionate about something, they should go and do it. Figure out the balancing act that works for them and give it a shot. What’s the worst thing that will happen? Failure? That might burn a bit, but you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move forward. Because if you don’t at least try and fail, you will never, ever know.

I used prezi for the slide presentation and had a lot of fun playing with it (thank you Alexis for suggesting it!), and kept my slides visual and essentially just talking points for myself. I even included a John Roderick quote that I painstakinging transcribed from a episode 52 of Roderick on the Line:

The … situation is not such that you have to quit your present job to pursue your fantasy job, because you don’t even know what your fantasy job is. You need to start doing your fantasy job until you’re having so much fun and success at it that you have to quit your real job because your fantasy job has taken over.

He’s genius.

I plan on sharing my Coffee House Special cupcake recipe next week, and this week I’ll post my first vegan cookie recipe(!!!) Both treats were well received, which is something I will never grow tired of—I love making people smile.

Thank you Sarah, and everyone who attended, for coming out!!! It was such a cool experience and further cemented my “this is what I want to, no, HAVE to do with my life. It’s my passion and I’m going to do everything I can to grow it into something big for myself.

Oh, I also forgot to mention last night, I LOVE baking with LaPhroaig! I’ve used it in a smoked vanilla scotch whisky cake filled with goat cheese and topped with caramelized onion buttercream and a balsamic reduction, as well as in a rich chocolate cake filled with pecan praline, topped with vanilla buttercream and more praline. Delish!
