Review: Cake Break’s plethora of goodies
19 May
Ray and I enjoy the quaint town of Rehoboth Beach, mainly because of Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats brewpub. Best weekend destination ever, in my humble opinion. Plus it helps that we can always get a good rate at Crosswinds Motel, and that the main street area is littered with fun shops, giving us plenty to do and see.
We were there over Easter weekend for a little getaway and a lot of Dogfish Head drinking and eating. But because we weren’t going to live in the pub, we decided to walk around town Saturday morning, stopping at one of our favorite spots for breakfast, The Gallery Espresso.
Walking up toward the cafe, I just happened to look down a side street and saw the word “bakery,” then I saw a cupcake decoration. I nearly hauled Ray off his feet. “I think there’s a cupcake bakery down there!!!” And I was right.
Cake Break is owned by a bubbly and fast-talking Debbie, who greets you at the door, luring cupcakers in left and right. Her display cases were chock full with upwards of 8-12 different types of cupcakes, making choosing a tough choice. We selected 4 (such gluttons!) and shared each one after breakfast. For research purposes, you know.
Lemonhead
A yellow cake, which was spongy and moist. Filled with a “lemon curd,” which reminded me more of a doughnut’s lemon filling than a true curd, the cake was topped with a light lemon frosting then a small dollop of filling. Overall, we found the Lemonhead cupcake to be an excellent balance of sweet and tart. I thought it could have used more filling, but that’s my personal preference. This was our No. 2 favorite cupcake.
Lil’ Redhead
A devil’s food cake, filled with cherries—think pie filling—as well as topped with them. The frosting design made me think of a bird’s nest, which was rather unique. The chocolate cake was more delicate in structure than the Lemonhead, yet still moist. I would have preferred a stronger, richer chocolate flavor, however, to stand up to the cherries. This was our No. 4 favorite cupcake.
I’rish I Had Another
This was a Guinness chocolate cupcake, very moist and spongy. Biting in, you knew this was an adult cupcake—very boozy, in a good way. The cupcake was filled with a Jameson ganache, which was tasty but made it difficult to cut in half. The ganache wasn’t soft, so it was a little like cutting through a truffle. The frosting was exceptionally creamy, punched up with the very lovely flavor of Bailey’s Irish cream. I think this cupcake was true rival to my vanilla bean cupcakes with boozy chocolate mousse and Irish cream frosting. This was our No. 3 favorite cupcake.
Chocolate Indulgence
And now, the best for last. The chocolate cake held up to its predecessors being moist and spongy. The cake was also the most chocolaty of the 3 chocolate cupcakes (Odd fact: I’m not a huge fan of chocolate cupcakes, so it was weird we picked out 3). The chocolate sour cream filling was rich and divine—the texture was thick and smooth and everything you want in a filling. I enjoyed the chocolate ganache, which then had the filling piped out of the center and into a little peak. Hands down, our No. 1 favorite cupcake from Cake Break.
Final ruling: is a gem! Whenever we go to Rehoboth, it will be on my list of places to visit. Aside from their cupcakes, you can also get a quick breakfast of coffee, muffins and breakfast croissants, which is what we did Sunday morning. We were not disappointed and you won’t be either.
